Where we are, where we are

LakeSunset

Friends and readers of this blog know two things: 1. I am guilty of getting caught up in the excitement of things and failing to post about them and 2. Fall does something to me.

Since I can see the light changing and the smells of the desert are slightly different than they were the day before, I know fall is coming. My coffee tastes richer, I’m replaying old favorite albums and getting all weird and nostalgic about every little thing. Yes, folks, Autumn is on her way to scoop me up in her chilly, warm and comforting arms. Curse the end of Summer if you wish, but I am chomping at the bit for Fall to be here.

This Summer has been brimming with excitement and travel for us. We’ve seen our favorite musicians in concert, reunited with friends and family we haven’t seen in years, spent time in the high mountains and scorching desert, camped wherever our tired minds decided was appropriate and raised toasts to Nature, each other and being near the people who make our souls feel full again.

Although Summer has been beautiful, there have been others much like it. This Fall, however, I am anticipating much more than usual.  In less than three weeks, I will have been married to my best friend and ride-or-die travel/hiking/adventure buddy. Chris and I, along with friends and family from the far reaches of our travels, will all come together at the tiny lakehouse and New Hampshire shoreline where I spent my childhood summers with my parents, sister and grandparents.

The more I try to put my emotions and anticipation into words, the more trite and unbelievable it sounds.

So, I will leave it at this; soon I will be home, I will be married to the kindest person I have ever known and nearly all of the people we love from across this huge country will be in one tiny place to share in celebration.

It’s surreal.

I hope the white pines, gently lapping waves and loons will welcome and bless us with the grace that only Nature can provide.

I have finally defined “Home.”
